How can VBA help you or your company be more productive?

To paraphrase a popular television advertisement, Visual Basic does not always make the products you buy, but it can make the products you buy better.

Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is the programming language that powers the macros in Word, Excel, and Access. If you want your Excel Workbook to do a specific calculation that there is no built in function for, you can build your own functions with VBA. For example, Lotus 123 has a way of using the DAVERAGE function that is a bit different than the Excel implementation. Using VBA we built a function for a client which emulated the Lotus 123 function, but within Excel using a User-Defined function constructed with VBA. Conversion issues conquered!

"You can write code that 'scrubs' data from a mainframe system so it can be filtered and sorted properly."

Also, a small code could be written to collect certain information about client computers in a database and pass it along to Microsoft Visio, which would use the data to graphically illustrate what a network looks like.

Another alternative would be using VBA to collect data directly from network clients or their users.

"I have a number of employees that I am in charge of, and I need to find out if they are coming to a company function," said John. "I can email a form saying, 'check this box if you're coming to the picnic, then I can tally the results by having my VBA application automatically read each spreadsheet or Word document that is returned.'

That same questionnaire could be packaged as a VBA form, push it down as VBA infrastructure to the clients, and on the clients, [employees] will be sitting doing their work, and this form will automatically pop up. Through the UI they'll select whether or not they plan to attend
